Severe Thunderstorm WATCH

Severe thunderstorms are defined as storms that are capable of producing hail that is an inch or larger or wind gusts over 58 mph. Hail this size can damage property such as plants, roofs, and vehicles. Wind this strong is able to break off large branches, knock over trees or cause structural damage to trees. Some severe thunderstorms can produce dangerous lightning as well.

  • Watch for signs of a storm, like darkening skies, lightning flashes, or increasing wind. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be in danger from lightning. If thunder roars, get everyone indoors! Don’t wait for the rain. Lightning can strike out of a clear blue sky.
  • Tune in to the local TV or radio weather channel for current updates

Severe Thunderstorm WARNING

A severe thunderstorm warning may be issued by local weather channels, or the local sirens may go off.  This means to take cover.

  • Springbrook residents should take cover in the apartment bathroom, away from windows.
  • All windows and window coverings should be closed in your apartment
  • Staff will come to remind you, but you do not need to wait for this prompt

Tornado WATCH

A tornado watch gets issued when weather conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes, which most often occurs during strong thunderstorms.

  • Have a radio or TV nearby so you can receive updates on the changing conditions
  • If you have a cell phone have this nearby
  • Stay indoors and away from windows

Tornado WARNING

A tornado warning is more serious than a tornado watch. This alert indicates that a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar.

  • Seek shelter in your apartment bathroom, away from windows
  • Keep your radio, or TV tuned to a local station for updates.
  • Stay alert for sirens, but do not leave your safe zone or shelter until you receive a signal that the warning is lifted.
  • Staff will come to remind you, but you do not need to wait for this prompt

Flood Watches & Flood Warnings

  • A Flood Watch means that flooding in the area is possible. A Flood Warning means that a flood is already occurring in the area and safety measures must be taken to prevent injury and property damage. There are also Flash Flood Watches and Flash Flood Warnings, meaning the flooding is sudden and/or violent due to heavy rain or a dam break.

Springbrook staff are available for assistance 24/7. They are responsible for making sure that residents are aware of the weather changes and can help make sure that residents know what to do in the event of severe weather watches and warnings. If you have questions about any of this, please contact your Administrator, Tracy at ext. 125.
